In unseasonably warm conditions for a late October evening, the Taos Tigers football team rolled in to Pojoaque Valley High School, and came away with a much-needed win Oct 20.
The 35-6 victory halted a 4-game skid for the Tigers, who had not won a game since Sept. 9.
In the first quarter, it seemed like the match was going to be a defensive standoff, as the two teams held each other scoreless – having to punt multiple times and not producing many net gains on offense. Only one big play for Pojoaque marked any sort of excitement from either team in the first 12-minutes.
It was the second quarter, however, when Taos finally heated up and put some points on the scoreboard. Up by a touchdown, and with time running out, Coach Art Abreu wisely managed the clock and put his team in the perfect position to score one more time before heading into the locker room for halftime. A power-run play produced an additional touchdown as time expired – giving Taos a nice 14-0 cushion at intermission.
The trend continued for the Tigers as they tacked on another 7-points in the third quarter, and 14-points in the fourth.
In the other district game being played on the same evening, Española Valley routed Moriarty 50-0 – essentially allowing the Sundevils to control their own destiny and claim the district 2-4A title with a win in Pojoaque Oct. 27. Taos will travel to Moriarty next week to close out their regular season 2023 campaign. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
