On Friday and Saturday (Feb. 7–8), the Taos High School swim and dive teams qualified their 200-yard medley relay team in the District 2 Championships. The swim meet was hosted by St. Michael's in Santa Fe at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center.
The Tigers had competed in three events this season at the venue, and that experience showed during this final meeting in Santa Fe.
Seniors Juan Romo and eighth-grader Justin Foster both won their individual events: Romo won the 100-yard freestyle and Foster took first place in the 100-yard backstroke. Romo also won first in the boys 100-yard freestyle with a 49.84-second run and placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a 22.54-second run. Foster finished with 57.29 seconds for the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke and finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:09.16 time. Both swimmers earned 37 points each for the boys team.
Along with Foster and Romo, Keegan Lawson-Boothby and Arturo Renteria helped the boys place second in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay. The Taos boys relay shaved nearly six seconds off their 400-yard freestyle. Junior Jose Adame scored 13 points for the boys team when he placed sixth overall in the 100-yard backstroke event with a 1:13.27 run.
Senior Jaqueline Limas and teammate Isla Chavez both earned 17 points each. Limas placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a 1:02.89 time, an improvement of nearly two seconds in her previous attempt. Chavez placed eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:26.05 time, a nearly two-second improvement.
Limas and Chavez were also part of the state qualifying relay team in the 200-yard medley, along with juniors Sierra Griego and Bernice O’Reilly. They placed sixth with a finals run of 2:05.90, almost 10 seconds faster than their previous event. They netted the Lady Tigers 28 points for the relay event.
Limas, Griego, Chavez and sophomore Pepper Hickerson placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a final swim time of 1:54.43, earning 32 points. Griego also placed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle event with a 59.01 swim time.
The Taos boys scored 193 points and the girls scored 161 in the event. With the district meet in the books, the Tigers swim and dive qualifying athletes will travel to Albuquerque Academy for the 2025 Swimming and Diving State Championship at the Charger’s Natatorium Feb. 21–22.
