So far, the 2023 Questa football season has been all about taking on challengers from the east, as the first two Wildcat opponents were high schools barely within the confines of New Mexico’s shared border with Oklahoma and Texas.
Having logged 330 miles on the road for their first game of the 2023 season against the Clayton Yellowjackets on Aug. 19, it was a nice change of venue for the Wildcats, as they hosted the Logan Longhorns Saturday (Aug. 26) on their home field.
The village of Logan occupies the uppermost tip of the tri-city area, which includes Tucumcari and San Jon, N.M., and lies just under 20 miles (as the crow flies) from the New Mexico/Texas state line. Logan sits on the northern bank of the Canadian River and is best known for its proximity to Ute Lake State Park. For the Longhorns, it was a 400-mile diagonal round-trip to Questa — which lies just under 20-miles (as the crow flies) from the New Mexico/Colorado state line.
Lightning delay
As was the case with other sporting events taking place throughout the region over the weekend, lightning in the area delayed the start of Questa's game. Late August monsoonal flows brought moisture and electrical storms to parts of Northern New Mexico, prompting cautionary pauses due to the inherent dangers associated with lightning strikes.
As the storm threat waned, the game got underway with all the fanfare that a hometown football team brings. Ultimately, the Longhorns prevailed as more lightning in the area would cause the game to be stopped early. The final score: Logan 44, Questa 12.
The beauty of eight-man football
Played on a narrower field and with minor adaptations of the rules of the game, 8-man is akin to schoolyard or backyard-style football. Ample amounts of yardage gains and lots of scoring defines a typical contest. This translates to an exciting show for fans, and alleviates the pressure smaller schools feel when it comes to fielding a football squad. Currently, there are a total of 16 schools with 8-man football in New Mexico.
The loss put the Wildcats at 0-2. And though it might seem like a stumble out of the gate for the Wildcats, nothing can match the toughness of a determined ball club intent on keeping a sports tradition alive in this northern enclave. Fellow QHS students, athletes, coaches, event managers, fans, school personnel and village personnel came out in force to support Coach Jeremiah Burke and his squad. The second (and only other) home game is slated for Oct. 7 when Questa will host the Pine Hill Warriors.
The Wildcats will be on the road this week as they travel to Dulce to take on the Hawks. Game time is 6 p.m.
