The Taos High School varsity boys basketball team lost an 11-point lead to the invading Los Alamos Hilltoppers Saturday (Feb. 1) evening with a final score of 60–46.
The Tigers played well against the Los Alamos team with a 14-point quarter and held the Hilltoppers to 6 points. However, the visiting team began gaining momentum in the third quarter as the Los Alamos junior Lan Frazier sunk two three-pointers to help his team stay in the game.
The Tigers were up by 11 points in the third quarter, but Los Alamos got white hot from beyond the arc and dropped 20 points in the last two quarters. Despite a decent third quarter, Taos lost their composure toward the end, only scoring 5 points against their guests. The Tigers failed to run back on defense in a few possessions as well, giving the Hilltoppers a few easy buckets.
Frazier ended the night with 23 points and hit five of eight from the three-point line, including a logo three. Senior Hilltopper Isaac Manzanares had 15 points, and junior teammate Dylan Baca added 10.
As for the Tigers, Mario Rodriguez led the squad with 14 points. Senior Trevor Tibljas and junior center Malakhai Ely scored 7 points each, while junior Evan Salazar scored 6. Taos boys basketball head coach Hernando Chavez gave credit to their opponents for their offensive display that night and took the blame for the loss.
“You got to give credit to Los Alamos most and foremost,” Chavez said. “They had an excellent night offensively and shot the ball well. We did a poor job sometimes getting back in transition and we lost [Frazier]. He was able to knock down some big threes, and they were deep. Big credit to him. He stepped up and made those shots for his team.
After the loss, the Taos boys are 1–1 in the district with an overall record of 11–8. The Tigers took on Española Valley Tuesday (Feb. 4) at 7 p.m. in Española, but results for the game were unavailable as of press time.
After the Sundevils, the Tigers will travel to Moriarty on Monday (Feb. 10) to play the Pintos at 7 p.m. Then they're off to Pojoaque to face the Elks on Thursday (Feb. 13) at 7 p.m. The Tigers will host Moriarty for their final series meeting of the district Saturday (Feb. 15) at 7 p.m., then travel to Los Alamos the following Tuesday (Feb. 18) with tip-off at 7 p.m. Finally, the Tigers will host the Sundevils Friday (Feb. 21) for the district's last game, which will start at 7 p.m.
