Regina Scherffius, Director of Operations and Communication at the Couse-Sharp Historic Site, reached out to the Tempo this evening with the sad news that Virginia Couse Leavitt has passed away.
Couse Leavitt was the granddaughter of Taos Society of Artists co-founder, Eanger Irving Couse.
"It is with deep sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Virginia Couse Leavitt in Taos on November 26 at the age of 92, after a brief illness. She was surrounded by family members and close friends. Ginnie's family has requested privacy for the time being, as they, and those of us here at Couse-Sharp Historic Site, begin to cope with this great loss.
Ginnie was a visionary leader whose contributions to the preservation of Taos's rich artistic heritage have left an enduring legacy. As the co-founder of the Couse-Sharp Historic Site and The Couse Foundation, Ginnie's tireless dedication to the arts and the history of the Taos community has shaped the cultural landscape for generations to come.
We will release information on services and memorials when those have been set. We appreciate your condolences and ask that you offer thoughts and prayers for her and for those who grieve. Thank you."
Tempo will have a tribute to Virginia Couse- Leavitt in next week's edition (Dec 5,) by Rick Romancito.
