The Taos High School varsity, junior varsity and middle school teams took a successful trip to the Academy for Tech and the Classics for the 2024 ATC Invitation last Saturday (Aug. 31), with boys varsity placing first as a team and Elia Hurtado winning individually.
The invitation brought in over 20 teams, including their middle school counterparts. The junior and varsity teams ran the full 3-mile run, while the middle schoolers ran a 1.5-mile course.
In boys varsity, the Taos Tigers took first place with 33 points (lower scores are better), followed by Pecos High School with 64 points. Third place went to Santa Fe High School with 102 points. Santa Fe Prep scored 127 points to place fourth in the boys division, while the hosting team placed fifth with 137 points.
Tigers junior Judah Daffron and sophomore Billy Romero finished first and second, respectively. Daffron had a 16:06 finish while Romero followed with a 16:33 mark for second. Third place for the boys went to Pecos’ junior Brandyn Encinias with a 16:56 finish. Three St. Michael’s boys took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively: senior Everett Kuhn, junior Jeremiah Rodriguez and senior Jaden Perea.
As for the rest of the Tigers, junior Brandon Mirabal finished seventh with a 17:57 time, senior Carlos Limas placed 15 with an 18:42 time and sophomore Victor Enriquez placed 18 with an 18:52 mark.
The varsity girls took second place as the Lady Tigers put up 79 points, behind Santa Fe Prep’s 38 points in first place. Academy for the Tech and the Classics made the podium at third with 85 points.
At the top of the varsity girls is a freshman from St. Michael’s, Chloe Grieco, who put in a sub-20 minute run, beating Santa Fe Prep junior Sophie Bair’s time of 20:43 by a minute and a half. Lady Tiger junior Elaina Cisneros placed third with a 20:51 time. For the rest of the Lady Tigers, sophomore Jaeda Blair took 11th place with a 23:13 finish. A few steps below Blair was junior Lilli Hart with a 17th-place exit. Finally, junior Mary Jane Cook finished 22nd overall with a 24:04 run time.
Freshman Lady Tiger Elia Hurtado was the top athlete in the girl’s junior varsity, taking first place with a 26:48 run time. Hurtado is followed by Academy for Tech and the Classics runners Ashley Gomez and Mia Prentice, both freshmen, at second and third, respectively. For the boys junior varsity, none of the athletes made the podium, with Tigers freshman Amos Aloia landing at 25th overall with a 28:32 run in Santa Fe.
On the middle school runs, Taos Middle School’s Rio Johnson took third overall in the boys division with a 9:18 run time, while Ayva Martinez was the highest placer for the girls with a 12:12 finish that day.
The Taos junior and varsity teams will travel to Alamosa, Colorado, for the 31st annual Joe I. Vigil Cross Country Invitational this Saturday (Sept. 7) starting at 8 a.m. After Colorado, the team will return to Santa Fe for the John Grimley Invitation Oct. 5.
