Two Peaks shooting

According to the Taos County Sheriff's Office, Carson residents Janos Purvis, 47, and Brandon Ackaret, 36, fired shots at one another following a verbal confrontation Feb. 27. Ackaret was struck twice, but his condition was unknown.

On Thursday (Feb. 27) the Taos County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police responded to a shooting in Carson Estates, near the Two Peaks area across from the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge.

According to a release, Carson residents Janos Purvis, 47, and Brandon Ackaret, 36, fired shots at one another following a verbal confrontation.

“Sheriff’s Deputies preliminary investigation revealed that after a verbal confrontation between the two men, Ackaret ran over Purvis’ foot with his truck,” Sheriff Steve Miera said in a press release. “Purvis then discharged a firearm at Ackaret, hitting him twice. Upon the arrival of Sheriff’s Deputies on scene, Ackaret barricaded himself in his home, refusing to come out.”

Sheriff’s deputies and state police contained the scene, while awaiting a Special Response Team’s vehicle. Ackaret was taken into custody without incident, then flown to UNM Hospital for treatment. He will be facing charges upon his release.

Purvis is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm, both third-degree felonies. According to court records, Purvis was arraigned, released with an ankle monitor and placed under house arrest. A petition to review the conditions of his release was filed Monday (March 3).

The case will also be referred to the FBI, according to the release, which did not offer details about Ackaret's condition.
