The Taos High School varsity volleyball team started their district tournament 2–0 with wins over Pojoaque Valley and rival school Española Valley with final scores of 3–0 and 3–1, respectively.
Lady Tigers devour hosting Elkettes
On the road last Tuesday (Oct. 8), the Tigers blanked the Pojoaque Valley Elkettes, beating their host in three sets.
The Tigers stayed dominant throughout the game, and the Elkettes were unable to keep up. Despite ramping up their points production each set, the Elkettes ultimately lost each — with their third set being the closest at 25–23. With this win, the Lady Tigers started their season well and carried momentum into their game against Española Valley two days later.
Taos exorcises Lady Sundevils at home
The Lady Tigers hosting the Española Valley Lady Sundevils that Thursday (Oct. 10) at home, where Taos triumphed over their guests in four sets.
Española Valley gave the Lady Tigers a run for their money in the early sets. The Lady Sundevils went point-for-point in the first set against the Lady Tigers. When the Taos team built a lead, Española Valley erased it to break even. The visitors would take the lead twice but failed to maintain their lead to finish. Taos overtook the Lady Sundevils 28–26.
The Lady Tigers remained consistent in the second set while their guests regressed to a 19-point performance. The home team slowly gained momentum in the second despite Española gaining control midway through. Mistakes from the visitors also led to a swift end to the set 25–19.
Taos’ rival came back with a vengeance in the third set as the Lady Sundevils started 5–1. Taos shaved a few points off the Sundevils' lead, but Española kept the win away from the Lady Tiger’s paws at 25–20. However, the Sundevils’ momentum waned and the Lady Tigers sped past their prey in the fourth set for a final score of 25–8. The Lady Tigers built a 10-point lead and Española Valley could not generate enough on offense to restart their gears.
“The best part of our game is being able to put it together,” Taos High School varsity volleyball coach Rachel Rael said. “That third set didn’t go our way, but I’m very proud of how they bounced back on the fourth.”
Fall to Robertson
The Lady Tigers hosted the Robertson Lady Cardinals last Saturday (Oct. 12), losing to their visitors in four sets.
Robertson is a non-district opponent and a good test for the Lady Tigers. The Lady Cardinals had a strong record of 11–5, and they showed why against Taos. Despite the 3-1 score, the Lady Tigers put up a fight against their seasoned guests.
The first set went to the Lady Cardinals at 26–24 and the Lady Tigers got back in the second with a score of 25–22. The Lady Tigers slowed down in the third set, having lost 25–21. In the last set, the Lady Tigers battled Robertson but unfortunately lost the war at 27–25.
Up next
The Taos varsity volleyball team is now 2–0 in the district with an 8–8 record as of press time Tuesday (Oct. 15). The Lady Tigers will host the visiting Moriarty High School Lady Pintos Tuesday (Oct. 22) and Pojoaque Valley the following Thursday (Oct. 24).
