Taos High School's Jumpstart Freshman Transition Program runs from 8 a.m. to noon through Aug. 2, offering incoming students a chance to become familiar with their new environment ahead of the first day of school Aug. 12.
With less than two weeks until the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, a new cohort of Taos High School students are scrambling to finish their summer plans, hang out with friends and spend their final days of break basking in the sun.
But as July turns to August, recently graduated eighth graders are experiencing a blend of excitement and apprehension about the upcoming year.
Not to fear: Taos High School’s Jumpstart Freshman Transition Program is designed to combat those intimidations and help students gain comfort from the school they will be attending for the next four years. The program began July 31 and runs through Aug. 2 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The transition from middle school to high school can be challenging. High schools are generally much larger, have more classrooms and feature winding hallways that can make navigating the building overwhelming. Packed hallways and multiple-classroom schedules only add onto the intimidation students may be feeling.
“No matter what way you look at it, Taos High School is the biggest in the area, so we want to make it an easier transition for incoming freshmen from whichever school they’re coming from," said Richard Quintana, newly-appointed assistant principal and Taos High's former Academic Career Experience teacher.
During the program, students will tour the high school, pay class fees, fill out freshman paperwork, pick up their personal Chromebook, and even grab their class schedules. Participants can also ask questions directly to Taos High School staff regarding the school layout, schedules or anything else, and meet their freshmen classmates while doing scavenger hunts and vying for door prizes, among other fun activities.
