Peña Relays
In what seems to be a recurring theme this spring, another Saturday event in Northern New Mexico was canceled due to intolerable weather.
The Peña Relays held at Peñasco High School April 27 began despite cold temperatures and a slight drizzle from a lingering storm that covered the area, but blizzard-like conditions with heavy snowfall caused event organizers to abruptly call off the meet shortly after starting.
This was the second time in the month of April where a scheduled meet the two Peñasco track teams participated in were shortened due to wintry weather. At the Taos Tiger Invitational held at Anaya Stadium April 6, ice that had formed on the track had to be removed by volunteers before events began in the morning. As the wind persisted throughout the start of the running events, snowdrifts continued to pile up on the inside lanes before the mid-morning melt.
Unsure of the forecast for the remainder of the day, the Peña Relays went on as scheduled, and teams who were invited showed up to compete. Usually, field events begin before races commence, so a few events did take place before athletes were allowed to load back up on their respective busses.
Teams in attendance included Cimarron, Coronado (Gallina), Mora, Questa, Springer, Dulce, and Mesa Vista.
Ram Relays
On Monday (April 29) the Peñasco track and field teams were scheduled to travel to Cimarron to compete in the Ram Relays, however results were not posted by the time this section went to press. Questa and Mesa Vista were also slated to attend the Ram Relays.
There was no official word as of press time if the Peña Relays were rescheduled for sometime this week, but the lack of opportunities for athletes to compete for state qualifying times, heights and distances may thwart the chances of Northern New Mexico athletes to qualify for state.
The district 5-2A meet is scheduled to take place in Questa May 3. Escalante (Tierra Amarilla), McCurdy (Española), Mesa Vista (Ojo Caliente), Mora, Peñasco, and Questa are slated to attend.
The class A-3A (three divisions) state track and field championships will occur at the University of New Mexico May 10-11. Preliminary heats and some field events are scheduled for Friday (May 10), while final heats and remaining field events are slated for Saturday (May 11). Cost to enter the stadium each day is $12 for adults and $7 for students (K-12), military personnel and seniors (65 and older). Parking is $7.
