New Mexico's unemployment rate in September was up slightly but remained in the same ballpark as the national rate.
According to the state Department of Workforce Solutions' most recent employment news release, the unemployment rate for New Mexicans in September was 4.2 percent, up from August's rate of 4.1 percent, which was also the national unemployment rate in September. Last September, New Mexico's unemployment rate was 3.9 percent.
Luna County had the highest non-seasonally adjusted unemployment at 8.2 percent. The county that had the lowest unemployment rate was Los Alamos at 2.4 percent. Santa Fe County's unemployment rate was 3.8 percent, with 2,770 of the 73,740 people in the county's labor force unemployed, according to preliminary September data.
The data shows growth in government jobs from August to September. Private sector jobs dropped by 2,400, or 0.3 percent, from August to September, but September's private sector was still up 10,400 jobs, or 1.5 percent, from last year. Government jobs grew by 7,100, with the help of 4,100 state government education jobs.
