Last March, in the 2020 New Mexico State Cross Country Championship Meet, there was one name dominating the conversation on the boys side, Gilbert Valdez. The Peñasco runner placed first in the individual results, finishing the 5k race in 17:04.78, a full  six seconds ahead of first place. The feat was even more impressive because nobody saw it coming. Valdez was the sole runner for Peñasco.

The Peñasco Panthers cross-country team recently won the District 5-A/2A meet in Mora a little over a week ago. Then the Panthers traveled to Rio Rancho High School on Saturday (Nov. 9) to compete in the Class A/2A State Cross-Country Championships.
