At first, big time filmmakers used sequels as just a way to capitalize on the popularity of an initial idea that seemed ripe for further expansion. Sometimes it worked, but more often it didn’t.

Cases in point include the “Terminator,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Transformers” and “Resident Evil” franchises that started out promising, but ultimately crashed and burned mainly because studios banked on the idea that all audiences wanted from them was more of the same.
